3 of the Best Piney Lake Activities
Everywhere you turn in Vail Valley, incredible views and stunning landscapes await. One of the best ways to completely immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of the area is with a hike! Colorado is home to over 6,000 miles of incredible hiking trails, and Vail Valley is no exception. The trails range in difficulty and length, so finding one that suits your ability and experience level is never an issue. The Upper Piney River Falls Trail is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting and scenic trails in the area. The trail is six miles long but features easily traversable terrain that is great for hikers of any skill level.
The quiet surface of Piney Lake almost seems like it was made to reflect the gorgeous mountain peaks that surround it. For an environment as peaceful and relaxing as this, fishing is the ideal activity. You won’t find a more fitting way to spend your time! Cast your line and watch as the blue sky, white mountaintops, and green pine trees dance their way across the water.
Many varieties of trout call the Piney River home including brookies, browns, cutthroat, and rainbow trout. These species live in such abundance, that you’re almost guaranteed to make a catch! Fishing licenses are required to fish in this private lake and can be acquired at Walmart, City Market, and Safeway. You can also rent a real for $20 from Piney River Ranch.
Canoeing & Stand-Up Paddleboarding
Another great way to experience Piney Lake is from the water! Canoe and Paddleboard rentals are both available for $30 per hour from Piney Lake Ranch. Explore the surface of the lake and admire the panoramic views of Gore Range as you navigate the calm waters. If you’re part of a large group, the ranch recommends making a reservation. Rentals are first come, first served, so call well in advance!
