About Holy Cross Wilderness
Designated by Congress in 1980, the Holy Cross Wilderness is managed by the White River National Forest. All 124,000 acres are located in Colorado, directly south of Vail along Route 24. The wilderness area features dramatic elevation changes, picturesque glacier lakes, and some of the most stunning wildlife in the entire country. During the warm months of the year, the forest sees heavy traffic from hikers, campers, and wildlife enthusiasts!
What Are the Best Hiking Trails?
Holy Cross Wilderness area features some of the best hiking in Colorado. There are hundreds of miles of loop trails that wrap around the lakes and weave their way through the forest. Halfmoon Trail, for example, takes you to the top of Mt. Holy Cross and offers one of the best views in the area. The trail runs along East Cross Creek and features dispersed camping sites and an incredible chance to catch a glimpse of the area’s wildlife!
Where to Go Fishing
The glacier lakes that pepper the landscape offer more than just a great photo op. They also are home to some of the best fishing in Colorado! Meadows, creek crossings, and still lakes are home to many species of fish. Trout is the top catch of the area and can be seen in abundance at Mystic Island Lake, Lake Charles, and Strawberry Lakes.
