Gearing Up for 2014 -2015 Ski Season

Gearing up for Ski Season 2014 – 2015 on Vail Mountain and the 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships in Beaver Creek

The snow has already made its appearance in the Vail Valley which means the buzz around the countdown to Opening Day has begun. Vail’s Opening Day is on the calendar for Friday, November 21. Don’t pencil it in your schedule, use a permanent pen to write it in your schedule, the 2014 – 2015 Season will be action packed!

Ski and Snowboard Club Vail will host their 45th Annual Ski and Snowboard Swap, appropriately titled “World Swap Championships” at Dobson Ice Arena in Vail, October 24th – 26th. Sell your unneeded winter gear with a portion of the sales going to Ski and Snowboard Club Vail. Drop off days for items you’re interested in selling begin Saturday, October 11 – October 24th. For those shoppers who are looking to buy that coveted pair of skies, jacket, boots or helmet, Early Bird Public Shopping begins Friday, October 24th, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., admission is $15.00 and $5.00 with a student I.D. From 7:00 – 10:00 p.m., admission is $5.00 and Free with a student I.D. October 25th & October 26th, admission is complimentary. For more information visit www.vailskiswap.com.

After you’ve purchased your gear at the Ski Swap, be sure to get your gear all tuned up for early season conditions. The proper wax on your skis or snowboard will either make or break your day on the mountain. One of my favorite shops to get my skies waxed is Double Diamond in Lionshead. Location of Double Diamond could not be much easier, as you walk from the Lionshead Parking Structure to the Lionshead Gondola, Double Diamond will be on your left. To make your ski day even easier, they offer winter locker rentals so you don’t have to haul your equipment to and from your car or bus stop. The knowledgeable, longtime staff will get your equipment dialed in no matter what time of year. In addition to skies, boot fitting, clothing, and helmets, you can also find great accessories like boot heaters and dryers, sunglasses, goggles, and the ever-popular beats headphones.

The crème de la crème of all ski events will arrive in the Vail Valley February 2 – 15, 2015, The 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. The Vail Valley Foundation was once again the pick organization to host the coveted championships in Beaver Creek. Spectators will see the best men and women skiers in all disciplines of alpine skiing take on The Birds of Prey racecourse. The Sweetheart of the Vail Valley, Mikaela Shiffrin will be a crowd favorite as will Lindsey Vonn. The Vail Valley Foundation is always looking for volunteers for this event and all events which they promote, visit their website for more information about volunteering and event details.

As the 2015’s are wrapping up, Spring skiing will be the next highlight of the season. Locals and guests alike can never get enough of the longer, warmer days on the mountain and aprés ski on your favorite sunny deck. Whether it be the anticipation of Opening Day on Vail Mountain or Spring Skiing, and whatever you endeavor in between, the 2014 – 2015 Season will be one to remember!
